The Teach It Back Method- Learn, Retain, and Master

Studying for exams can sometimes feel like you’re just memorizing information long enough to pass a test, but not long-term. While many students may study, re-read their notes, highlight and annotate readings, and watch additional videos via YouTube to help explain their material, some still struggle with retaining information. One technique to help change this, which has proven to be highly effective, is called The Teach It Back Method.

The Teach It Back Method is a tool in which students explain what they have learned in their own words. This process works best when a student can teach it to their peers, who can then ask further clarification questions about the material to really test the student's understanding and knowledge of the concept. Rather than repeatedly reviewing their notes, students actively recall and engage with the material by breaking down concepts in order to explain them clearly to their audience. This process forces the student to identify what they understand and what they still need to review. Using this method to gain a deeper understanding can lead to improved academic performance, stronger confidence, and deeper comprehension skills.

Therefore, by simply explaining concepts out loud to a family member, friend, or tutor, students can turn passive studying into active learning. With time, this tool can help students build stronger academic foundations and develop skills that will support them long term through their academic journey
